Research Abstract |
Pecently, there have been made a lot of investigations on the alternative renewable sources of energy. One possible source of renewable energy is contained in the ocean wave, and many promissing ideas of wave energy converter have been suggested. The waters surrounding Japan are the most favorable areas in the world for the ocean wave energy extraction. This project is related to the development of new type of wave energy converting device by use of the phenomena of synchronization of unbalanced rotor. It is well known that an unbalanced rotor which is applied an oscillation against some resisting torque. This device consists of a rotor with a large unbalanced weight, installed on a ship which is excited by the ocean wave and a power generator connected to the rotor by an over drive gear. The system is analyzed assuming that the ship is an oscillating system with one degree of freedom which is excited by a harmonic wave motion. The rotor with large unbalance rotates synchronously with the wave frequency. The steady state rotation of the rotor and the possible energy conversions are obtained theoretically applying the averaging method. An experimental model plant which is made up of an unbalanced rotor mounted on a mass-spring system on a vibrating table is tested in the labolatory.
