Research Abstract

Jointing methods by prestressing, use of stud shear connectors and bond between steel and concrete were picked up as fundamental methods to joint a reinforced concrete member to a steel member, and their characteristics of deformation and strength were investigated experimentally. The followings were derived from the experiments.
1 In the joint to transfer tensile force by prestressing, the rigidity is a problematic point to be made clear whereas the strength is not because it can be easily made high enough. When concrete of proper thickness is placed at the end portion of a steel member, the rigidity can be increased to a satisfactory degree by stiffening effect of concrete.
2 The strength of the joint to transfer compressive force is governed by the strength of concrete subjected to concentrated line load across an end plate. It is proportional to the strength of concrete and increases linearly with the increase of the thickness of the end plate.
3 The joint in which steel plates with stud shear connectors and reinforcing bars are embeded together into concrete can transfer the force acting on the steel plates to the reinforcing bars satisfactorily. The static strength as well as the fatigue strength of the joint of this type can be made equal to that of the reinforcing bars when the number and arrangement of the stud, the strength of concrete and the embeded length are selected properly. Especially the fatigue strength can be made higher than that of the joint in which the steel plate is welded directly to the reinforcing bars.
4 It was made clear by the results of tests on reinforced concrete beams in which H shaped steel was embeded that the strength of the beam becomes equal to the total strength of the reinforced concrete beam and H shaped steel only if the deformation becomes extremely large, when the bond strength between the reinforced concrete and steel can not be expected.
