Research Abstract

Theoretical and experimental investigations are made on the jigging process in the air-pulsated jigs. The main purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of the trapezoidal wave pattern of the pulsation, which has been recommended as the optimum one for separation, and to propose a useful guide to its practical use.
To this end, a new type of air-pulsated jig of small size, which can easily create various kinds of wave patterns of pulsation,has been constructed, and detailed experimental investigations have been made into the dynamic behavior of the particles in the jigging bed as well as the basic relations between the jigging capacity and the properties of the water pulsation.
A mathematical model of the jigging process has been developed. It can not only predict the dependence of the jigging capacity on many parameters including the wave pattern but also visualize the jigging process in detail by using a personal computer.
The theory has been verified by experiments.
It is found that the capacity of the air-pulsated jig is considerably affected by the wave pattern as well as by the wave height and the frequency of the pulsation. In most case the trapezoidal wave pattern can be expected to bring about more than tens percents better results than the existing sinusoidal one.
The optimum condition for separation is in general a little complicated because it depends on many foctors. However, the mathematical model developed is found to be very useful to seek it.
