Research Abstract |
DURING THREE-YEAR TERM OF THIS RESEARCH PROJECT, APPLICABILITY OF BRASSINOLIDE AND RELATED ANLOGUES TO CHEMICAL REGULATION OF CULTIVATED PLANTS WAS PURSUED TO INCREASE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION. BRASSINOSTEROIDS WHICH COULD BE UTILIZED IN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION WERE SURVEYED FROM SEVERAL PLANT SOURCES, RESULTING IN THE ISOLATION AND STRUCTURAL DETERMINATION OF TEN BRASSINOSTEROIDS. SOME OF THEM WERE SYNTHESIZED AND EZAMINED FOR THEIR BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY AND FURTHER THEIR PRACTICAL USE. IN ORDER TO OBTAIN CHEAPER BRASSINOSTEROIDS, CHEMICAL SYNTHESES OF VARIOUS COMPOUNDS WERE CARRIED OUT AND IT WAS FOUND THAT COMPOUNDS WHICH CARRY A AND B RINGS OF BRASSINOLIDE AND A HYDROXYLATED ALKYL CHAIN HAVE WEAK BUT DISTINCT BILOGICAL ACTIVITY. VARIOUS MICROORGANISMS WERE SURVEYED WITH RESPECT TO THEIR PRODUCTIVITY OF BRASSINOSTEROIDS. ALTHOUGH EVERY EFFORTS, FOR EXAMPLE, ADDITION OF PRESUMABLE PRECURSORS TO THE CULTURE MEDIUM OR USE OF VARIOUS ILLUMINATION CONDITIONS, WERE MADE, ANY POSITIVE RESULT COULD NOT BE OBTAINED. POSSIBLITIES OF PRACTICAL USE WERE EXAMINED FOR BRASSINOLIDE, HOMOBRASSINOLIDE AND EPIBRASSINOLIDE. YIELD INCREASES WERE OBTAINED FOR RICE, WHEAT, CORN, WHILE RESISTANCE TO COLD TEMPERATURE WAS OBSERVED FOR RICE, CUCUMBER, TOMATO AND EGG PLANT. RESISTANCE TO HERBICIDES, DESEASES, SALT INJURY WAS ALSO FOUND FOR VARIOUS PLANTS. THROUGH THIS RESEARCH BRASSINOSTEROIDS WERE FOUND USEFUL TO CONTROL GROWTH OF VAROUS CROPS AND VEGETABLES.
