Research Abstract

To assess the effect of light on living organisms as an environmental factor, it is necessary to consider the relation between spectral component of the environmental light and absorption or action spectrum of the photoreceptive organ. The number of the indices for evaluation should be small, only one if possible. In this study we propose to use an index to characterize the environmental light. The principle is as follows.
1) The energy of each wavelength is measured from 300nm to 1,100nm.
2) The energy for each wavelength is converted into photon number.
3) The numbers of photon are weighed by relative absorption spectrum and all these weighed numbers are integrated.
This value is called "photon number equivalent to maxijmum wavelength". We designed and made an equipment to measure the energy of light and to calculate this index. Then the validity of the index was tested by different experiment. The result indicate the usefulness of the index for characterizing the environmental light.
