Research Abstract

In order to detect efficiently and rapidly chest abnormalities on mass survey, an automatic chest X-ray film screening system based on pattern recognition and image understanding was constructed. In the first stage, chest radiograms were classfied by M.D.Y.KINOSHITA in term of his deep experiences about the chest examination, and data-base for normal and abnormal chest radiograms were constructed.
In the second stage, algorithums for extracting features were developed, that is induvidual PA-chest X-ray films were scanned, digitized and processed by developed algorithmus. Finally, decision functions were derived and checked by data base of healthy subjects. Main procedures are as follows. (1) Tracing the boundary of the ver tebra, and upper, middle and lower lung fields,(2) Measuring a shape of the boundary and the contrast at the neighbouring field of the boundary and (3) Judging abnormalities by the measurement coefficients.
The results indicate that our screening system could detect precisely abnormal shadows in the lung, cardiac enlargement, diaphragmatic deformations and scoliosis.
