Research Abstract |
In order to investigate the velopharyngeal insufficiency in cleft palate patients, the systemic approach by means of velopharyngeal fiberscope and ultrasonic examination has been done. In this research,1.useful application of ultrasonic examination, 2.synchronized assessment of both examinations was studied. 1. Useful application of ultrasonic examination: The dynamic movement of lateral pharyngeal wall was observed, and it is useful in diagnostic analysis q-alitatively and quantitatively. In this examination, the head positioner of our making was applied to fix the patient's head and ultrasound crystal. 2. Synchronized assessment of fiberscopic and ultrasonic examination. It was possible for a three dimentional analysis of velopharyngeal function by two examinations. In normal subjects, the el-vating movement of velar and medial excursion of lateral pharyngeal wall was well synchronized. But in cleft palate pstients with velopharyngeal insufficiency, movement of velar and lateral pharyngeal wall were obviously reduced and unstable in many functions. and it was possible to assess the velopharyngeal insufficiency for the following therapy. This system is useful for assessment the velopharyngeal function in cleft palate patients, and ultrasonic examonation is practicable without trouble in childfood with cleft palate.
