Research Abstract |
A prospective study for the improvement of clinical application of artificial intelligence has been carried out; namely [1] the improvement of an expert system, [2] the development of methodology for the self expansion of knowledge bases, and [3] the application into a computer-aided instruction in clinical medicine. Practical application of fluid therapy consultation system (FLUIDEX) has been a most important aim of the project. The softwares were improved in the following points; the method to substitute the lacked data by the knowledge base, the function to present the different diagnoses with ground and process of the diagnosis. As the hard ware, a personal computer system was used considering the benefit for the popularization of AI system. The man-machine interface was smoothened by adopting the sophisticated display functions to simplify and shorten the conversation. A fail safe system was also adopted to the key board manipulation. The system was assessed in six hospitals for circulation and/or kidney diseases. And, as far as the representative cases concern, the decisions given by the AI system were fairly coincide with those of specialists. When the real data were contaminated by the false ones, the system fairly tolerated by the help of knowledge base. The application of the system to the computer-aided instruction, many of coworkers agreed the advantages of the AI system. The methodology of self-expansion of the knowledge base is not yet arranged, however, the transient technology such as laser disc and compact disc ROM may be some help of the AI system to satisfy the consumers. There remains some important project to put the system to practical use, for an example, the linkage of the AI system to the patient data base.
