Research Abstract |
In this project, the statistical properties of speckles resulting from light scattered from skin vascular tissue are investigated. It is found that the gradient of the power spectrum on a log-scale plot is characterized by the degree of skin blood flow. On the basis of this feature of the speckle statistics, a new instument of monitoring skin blood flow is developed. It consists of laser diode as a light source, newly designed quartz figer probe, photomultiplier as a detecter and one-chip microcomputer controlled digital signal processer. Various clinical experiments have shown that this prototype system is superior to current instruments in a long time monitoring of skin blood flow, without suffering from mechanical vibrations and thermal noise drift. The results of blood flow level obtained through this system were compared with those by the well-known intradermal Xe clearance method. An excellent linear relationship was demonstrated between the results of the two methods with the correlation coefficient of 0.85.
