Research Abstract |
The main objective of this research project was to construct novel theoretical frameworks which are capable of analyzing the economic policies in the areas of industry, technology and trade. 1. In the area of industrial structure we surveyed the evolution of the industry policies in post-war Japan both empirically and theoretically. We then applied the methods of game theory and new IO theory to investigate the welfare implications of the industry protection, the possibility of "excessive" competition in a decreasing-cost industry, the strategic interdependence between government and private firms, and so on. We also conducted a comparative study of Japanese and Chinese industries, made a detailed case study of the electrical communications industry in Japan, and analyzed the impacts of corporate tax system on the firm behaviors. 2. In the area of technology, we made an empirical survey of technology policies in Japan. We then developed a disequilibrium model of technological changes and a game-theoretic model of firms' imitation and R&D strategies. On the empirical side, we made a detailed study of the cooperative R&D strategies in Japan and discussed the impacts of the development of high-technology industries on the industrial structure. 3. In the area of international trade, we made a histrical survey of the trade structures and trade policies in post-war Japan. We then applied the new IO models and game theory to analyze the problems of employment adjustments, the policy response to industrial changes and the strategic manuevering of oligopolistic firms etc. in an explicitly open economy setting.
