Research Abstract |
FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS I HAVE COLLECTED THE DOCUMENTS WHICH WERE KEPT IN THE CUSTODY OF GHQ AND CIE, AND HAVE ALMOST COMPLETED THE TRANSLATION OF THE DRAFTS (IN ENGLISH) OF SCHOOL TEXTBOOKS ON JAPANESE HISTORY. THEY INCLUDE FOUR KINDS OF DRAFTS (IN ENGLISH) OF THE STOP-GAP TEXTBOOKS FOR NORMAL SCHOOLS, SECONDARY SCHOOLS AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS (ELEMENTARY AND ADVANCED COURSES), SUBMITTED TO CIE BY JAPANESE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION FROM ABOUT JANUARY, 1946. IN THESE DRAFTS ARE FOUND MANY PASSAGES WHICH WERE INSTRUCTED TO BE CROSSED OUT OR ALTERED BY CIE STAFF IN CHARGE. ALMOST ALL OF THEM ARE DESCRIPTIONS OF WHAT WE CALL THE IMPERIAL VIEW OF HISTORY, THAT IS, DESCRIPTIONS OF MYTHS RECORDED IN THE KOJIKI AND NIHONSHOKI, OR THE DESCRIPTIONS WITH EMPHASIS ON EMPERORS. IN EXAMINING THEM, I NOTICED THE PERSISTENCE ON THE PART OF THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION IN THE DESCRIPTIONS OF MYTH IN SPITE OF THE REPEATED INSTRUCTIONS AS TO THE ELIMINATION AND MODIFICATION BY CIE. IT WAS ENTIRELY DUE TO THE SEVERE POLICY OF EDUCATION REFORM THAT THE HISTORY TEXTBOOKS MADE A TURNABOUT TO THOSE OF SCIENTIFIC DESCRIPTIONS, WHICH IS A MATTER OF COURSE IN CIVILIZED NATIONS. THIS RESEARCH AIMS TO POSITIVELY CLARIFY THIS PROCESS.
