Research Abstract

1. High levels of arsenic (more than 10 <micro> g/g) were detected in the following marine organisms: squid (liver), carnivorous gastropods, clam Meretrix lusoria (gill), sea anemone and sea hare (digestive gland). The highest value of 340 <micro> g/g was obtained with the mid-gut gland of the carnivorous gastropod Charonia sauliae. Arsenic concentrations of fishery products were relatively low, except for dry laver (26.5 <micro> g/g).
2. A new HPLC-ICP method was developed for the determination of six arsenic compounds. Arsenate, arsenite and methylarsonate could be determined on Nucleosil 10SB with 0.02 M phosphate buffer (pH 7.0), arsenobetaine and arsenocholine on Nucleosil 10SA with 0.1 M pyridine-formate buffer (pH 3.1) and dimethylarsinate on both ion-exchangers.
3. By the HPLC-ICP method, arsenobetaine was found in squid, shellfish, sea anemone, sponge, red alga and Kusaya (horse mackerel). Arsenocholine was detected as a minor component only in the mid-gut gland of Charonia sauliae. An unknown arsenic compound of strongly cationic property was contained in the clam Meretrix lusoria, sea anemone Parasicyonis actinostoloides and sea hare Aplysia kurodai and other several unknown compound in many marine organisms and fishery products.
4. The strongly cationic arsenical in the clam was obtained in a relatively pure state as judged by TLC. From its <^1H> -NMR ( <delta> 1.7) and FAB-MS (m/z 135, 120 and 106), the compound was identified as a tetramethylarsonium salt <(CH_3)_4> <As^+> ・ <X^-> . This is the first study concerning the presence of a tetramethylarsonium salt in nature.
