Research Abstract

Ti-Ni alloy, named shape-memory alloy(SMA), have a nature of changing of its shape reversibly by the temperature cycle, and applied widely in commercial products. In this study, we tried to develop the penile prosthesis and artificial urethral sphincter device using this material. We have also studied the extracorporeal electrical control system by high frequency wave for these devices using external induced coil electrode and implant coil electrode. the electrical control system achieved to induce the enough energy to elicite the transformation of SMA. The evoked energy was 1.4W with one-layer, and 2.4W with two-layer implant coil electrode unit through 3mm thich ruber by this electrical control system using 100V alternating current. Because an ideal allooy is not available commercially at present, we used plate-spring type of SMA, 6mm wide, 0.5mm thick and transformed at 52゜C, with coiled nichrome wire heater covered with silicon. The nichrome wire heater was used for easy tempreture-control by electrical cotrol system, even though the SMA have a self-heating nature by the current. The prototypes of penile prosthesis and artificial urethral sphinster combined with two-layer coil electrode were studied of its availability. It was found that the SMA in both device achieved to transform effectively, however, the responce time and heating of wire was troublesome.
There is a lot of tasks to use the SMA device in clinic, but the shape-memory alloy was found to have a possibility of usefulness for the clinical application.
