Research Abstract |
We have developed a multiphase material consisting of hydroxyapatite [HAP],poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl metacrylate)[PTFEMA],and a metal core for use as a dental implant and bone substitute . Our studies showed that,(1) HAP-PTFEMA composite materials containing 70 wt% of HAP particles have approximately the same elasticity as bone ,and these composite materials bonded to an inner metal core have great strength and toughness . (2) These materials showed no cytotoxity, litlle tissue irritation , and good bone-tissue affinity ( direct bonding with bone ) . On the basis of these test results, we have developed a dental implant and a bone substitute for mandibular reconstruction . Our studies indicate that,(3) the dental implant, the surface of which consistes of this composite material bonded to a titanium tube having stress breaking structures in its inner space, showed biological mobility, good stress dispersion and shock absorption when subjected to computer analysis . (4) The artificial bone constructed of this mutiphas material was easily processed and manipulated, and (5)its clinical application yielded good results .
