Research Abstract |
Foundation studies on international maritime accidents and their compensation negotiations with the foreign governments from the last days of the Tokugawa government until the Meiji era. Purposes of Studies From the last days of the Tokugawa government until the Meiji era, when Japan was in the days under the unequal treaty, many maritime accidents occurred between Japanese sailing ships and steamers of foreign nationalities in Japanese territorial waters. In such accidents, Japan was always on the damaged side. And the details of these accidents and the progress of their compensation negotiations with the foreign governments have not been brought to light until today. The purposes of this studies are to investigate each accident, to study the progress of the compensation negotiations on these accidents as a whole and to try to position these accidents in Japan Modern History.
