| Research Abstract |
Protestant Missionaries in China prepared and published many Chinese works : the Chinese translations of the Bible, religious tracts, and books about modern western civilization.
In connection with the present research project, I examined in 1985 the Chinese works of W.A.P. Martin, E.C. Bridgman and W. Muirhead ; especially Martin's "Wan guo gong fa", Bridgman's " Lian bang zhi lue and Muirhead's "Di li quan zhi", "Dai ying guo zhi".
In 1986, I did research on the Chinese works of B. Hobson, consentrating on his medical works, it was the missionarie's intention to spread the knowledge about the west among Chinese people, which they would aid the propagation of the Gospel.
It may be also noted that these works were carried to Japan in the later Edo and early Meiji eras. As Japanese interlectures could read Chinese with ease, these books helped them acquire the knowledge of western civilization. So we can say there developed a very intimate relationship between China and Japan through the Chinese works produced by protestant missionaries.
