Research Abstract |
1.Field observations were made to study epizootiology of Marek's disease(MD) and to obtain some useful informations on predicting incidences of MD in the field chickens vaccinated with herpesvirus of turkeys. Eighteen test groups consisting of a total 661 chickens were setted on six rearing farms in Hokkaido and 3 rearing farms in Iwate, Sizuoka and Aichi Prefectures. Feather pulp sampls were obtained chronologically between 2-20 weeks of age from each test bird, and were investigated histologically for evidences of MD-associated nuclear inclusion in the feather-follicle epithelium and MD-associated lesions in the feather pulp( <R_1> -, <R_2> -, T-types). Incidences of MD up to 30 weeks of age in individual test bird were also investigated. Test groups showed MD mortality ranging from 0 to 30 per cent, and 5 of them showed 10 or more MD mortality. Incidence of MD in each test group correlated well with incidence of both MD-associated feather lesions abovementioned. 2. Feather pulps of sixty-four chickens aged from 15 to 35 weeks with Marek's disease(MD) lymphoma were investigated histopathologically. Of these, 92.2% of the birds had lymphoproliferative(T-type) lesions in the feather pulp. The T-type feather pulp lesion(FPL) occurred in all regions, but more frequently in the upper column of the pulp. Some of the T-type FPL regressed to a inflammatory ones consisting of necrosis or loss of constituent cells, edema and infiltration by small lymphocytes, heterophils and plasma cells. The regressive involvement of T-type FPL was usually diffuse throughout the tumorous lesions, but proliferative foci were also often seen concomitantly with regressive lesions. The grade and histologic picture of T-type FPL in chickens correlated well with those of the visceral lymphoma. These findings suggested that the pathological condition of MD lymphoma is predictable without autopsy by examining feather pulp samples.
