Research Abstract |
The characteristics of the interleukin-2(IL-2) receptors on activated human B cells and their functions in B cell growth and differentiation have been studied. 1. Peripheral blood B cells from normal individuals become to express IL-2 receptors when activated by SAC. 2. IL-2 receptors on activated B cells have an apparent molecular weight of 60-65 KD by SDS-PAGE analysis. 3. They are phosphorylated. 4. B cells express high affinity IL-2 receptors. 5. Normal activated B cells, as activated T cells, express two different pieces(1.5 and 3.5 kb) of mRNA. 6. Normal activated B cells are able to proliferate in response to exogenous IL-2. 7. IL-2, toghether with interferon, induces B cell differentiation into immunoglobulin secreting cells. Thus, our studies have demonstrated that IL-2 is, at least in vitro, able to promote the cell growth and terminal differentiation into immunoglobulin producing cells in B cells.
