Research Abstract |
PATHOGESESIS OF HYDEROCEPHALUS HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED FROM THE ASPECTS OF THE CHANGED OBSERVED IN THE BRAIN PARENCHYMA USING CHEMICAL TECHNIQUES. FIFTY-ONE MONGREL DOGS WERE USED IN TOTAL. NINE ANIMALS WERE CONSIDERED AS CONTROL AND 8 WERE CONSIDERED AS ACUTE HYDROCEPHALIC 1 TO TWO WEEKS AFTER CISTERNAL KAOLIN INJECTION. FOUR TO 6 WEEKS FOLLOWING KALIN INJECTION 8 ANIMALS WERE MADE HYDROCEPHALIC OF CHRONIC STAGE. THIRTEEN DOGS WERE OPERATED FOR SHUNTING EITHER VENTRICULO-PERITONEAL OR VENTRICULO-PLEURAL. WATER CONTENT OF WHITER MATTER OF ACUTE HYDROCEPHALIC DOGS INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY WHEN COMPARED TO THE CONTROL GROUP,HOWEVER, NO OTHER STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANF CHANGES OBSERVED IN THIS SERIES. IN SHUNTED ANIMALS WHITE MATTER WATER CONTENT WAS SLIGHTLY INCREASED WHEN COMPARED TO CHRONIC HYDROCEPHALIC ANIMALS BUT ITS SIGNIFICANCE IS NOT CLEAR. PROTEIN CONTENT OF THE BRAIN ESTIMATED BY LOWRY'S METHOD DISCLOSED 12,10,8 % INCREASE IN ACUTE AND CHRONIC AND SHUNT TREATED ANIMALS. DNA MEASUREMENT MADE AFTER BURTON'S METHOD REVEALED SOME TENDENCY OF INCREASE IN DNA CONTENT IN CHRONIC HYDROCEPHALIC GROUP. IT IS ASSUMED THAT THIS INCREASE MIGHT REFELCT CELL NUMBER INCREASE IN THESE ANIMALS. SHUNT PLACEMENT DID NTO INDLUENCE THE BRAIN CHANGES IN CELL NUMBER. WATER CONTENT STUDIES WERE IN ACCORDANCE WITH PREVIOUSLY PUBLISEHD PAPERS. INCREASE WAS NOT CLARIFIED. DNA INCREASE OF SLIGHTEST DEGREE, IN BYDROCEPHALIC ANIMALS WAS CONSTIDETRED REELECTING CELL NUMBER INCRERASE IN THESE ANIMALS AND THIS PHENOMENA MAY SUGGEST GLIAL CELL PROLIGRRATION IN CHRONIC STAGE AND THIS MIGHT AFFECT SOME FUNCTIONAL CHANGES IN HYDTOCEPHALIC STAGE. AGAIN SHUNT DID NOT AFFECT CELL NUMBER CHANGE AS ESTIMATES FROM DNA CONTENT.
