Research Abstract |
THIS RESEARCH ASSESSED PRORLEMS AND BACKGROUNDS OF LIVES OF THE ELDERLY WITH DEMENTIA AND THEIR FAMILIES AT HOME AND PROPSED COOPERATION OF HOME CARE AND COMMUNITY CARE FOR THEM. 1.DATA SOURCES AND ANALYSIS.INFORMATION ABOUT HEALTH STATUS WAS OBTAINED FROM 14084 PERSONS WHO WERE RESIDENTS OF TOKOROZAWA CITY AND ABOVE 65 YEARS OF AGE IN 1984.579 HAD SOME SYMPTOMS OF DEMENTIA. WE INTERVIEWED 350 SUBJECTS WITH DEMENTIA SYMPTOMS CLASSIFIED AS "ADVANCED" ACCORDING TO OUR SCREENING CRITERIA.THE INCIDENCE AND THE AGE OF ONSET WERE STRONGLY RELATED WITH SEXUAL,MENTAL,ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL FACTORS.ABNORMAL MENTAL SYMPTOMS AND THE DIFFICULTIES WHICH DISTRESSED CAREGIVERS WERE INFLUENCED BY THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THEM. 2.FOLLOW-OP STUDY.OF THE 350 SUBJECTS INTERVIEWED,306 WERE FOLLOWED UP FOR 3 YEARS.131 DIED DURING THIS PERIOD (MORTALITY RATE 42.8%) AND SURVIVAL RATES WERE 85% AND 57% AFTER 1 AND 3 YEARS.RESPECTIVELY.THE DETERMINANTS OF SURVIVAL WERE THEIR ADL LEVEL,PRESENCE OF A SPOUSE AND FAMILY CHARACTERISTICS. 3.CAGE AND ITS EVALUATION OF COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSIMG.WE CARED THE ELDERLY AND THEIR FAMILIES BY HOME VISITING AND RECOGNIZED PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT ROLES OF THE COMMUNITY SUPPORT PROVIDED BY FAMILY MEMBERS,RELATIVES,NEIGHBORS AND CLOSE FRIENDS AS WELL AS THAT SUPPLIED BY OFFICIAL AGENCIES.THE GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROMOTING SUCH INFORMAL COMMUNITY SUPPORT AND THE NETWORK FORMATION OF SERVICES FOR THEM.
