Research Abstract |
In order to investigate a phase on the development of ability in scientific thinking of a child, our group made a series of questions, and carried out investigations to the elementary and lower secondary school children. The questions we have made relate to five fundamental logical propositions and two combined logical propositions. Main conclusions of our study are summalized as follows. (1) For the questions which are considered to be unfamiliar but are seemed to be experienced by a child, it is rather difficult to find the difference of ability in scientific thinking among children. The main difference relates to how to use scientific words correctly. (2) According to our study, it is rather difficult to find teaching style which puts the stress on the development of ability in scientific thinking. (3) In science teaching today, much stress is put on the acquirement of scientific knowledge. Instead of this, the stress must be put on the development of ability in scientific thinking. One of the important factors to realize this will be to make children learn science by using direct experience, that is, by through inquiring approach. In such process, children will be able to develop ability in scientific thinking properly.
