Research Abstract |
1. FABRICATION BASED ON RF-SPUTTERING TO FABRICATE DIELECTRIC-COATED METALLIC WAVEGUIDES BASED ON RF-SPUTTERING, ELECTROPLATING, AND ETCHING TECHNIQUES, THE ELECTROPLATING PROCESS IS THE MOST ESSENTIAL TO REDUCE WAVEGUIDE LOSSES. WE HAVE FOUND THAT A PLATING BATH CAUSING HIGH STRESS DURING ELECTROPLATING IS SUITABLE TO FABRICATE WAVEGUIDES WITH LOW LOSSES. 2. FABRICATION OF ELECTRICALLY DEPOSITED GERMANIUM-COATED METALLIC HOLLOW WAVEGUIDES TO FABRICATE GERMANIUM-COATED WAVEGUIDES WITH RELATIVELY LARGE DIAMETER, A TECHNIQUE OF ELECTRODEPOSITION OF GERMANIUM INSIDE METALLIC PIPE HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED. WAVEGUIDES WITH SMALL TRANSMISSION LOSSES HAVE BEEN FABRICATED WITH A DIAMETER OF 4 mm AND LENGTH OF 1 m. TEMPERATURE INCREASE ALONG THE GERMANIUM-COATED WAVEGUIDES HAS BEEN FOUND VERY SMALL COMPARED WITH THOSE OF METALLIC AND GLASS HOLLOW WAVEGUIDES. 3. POWER HANDLING CAPABILITY OF HOLLOW WAVEGUIDES THEORETICAL ANALYSES HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT TO EVALUATE THE POWER HANDLING CAPABILITY OF HOLLOW WAVEGUIDES FOR <CO_2> LASER LIGHT. DIEELECTRIC-COATED METALLIC WAVEGUIDES ARE SHOWN TO TRANSMIT MUCH HIGHER POWERS THAN CONVENTIONAL METALLIC WAVEGUIDES. NEW FORMALISM DESCRIBING TEMPERATURE INCREASE ALONG WAVEGUIDES IS ALSO ESTABLISHED. 4. ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD THEORY A NEW METHOD IS DEVELOPED TO EVALUATE PROPAGATION CONSTANTS OF GUIDED OR LEAKY MODES IN CYLINDRICAL DIELECTRIC WAVEGUIDES WITH ARBITRARY CROSS SECTION. SEVERAL SIGNIFICANT RESULTS HAVE BEEN DERIVED BY USING THE NEW METHOD FOR SOLID AS WELL AS HOLLOW GUIDED STRUCTURES.
