Research Abstract |
The simple and small GC/MS were developed. The newly designed GC was 30cm x 30cm x 30cm in size and 16kg in weight, equipped with the on-column injector for a capillary or wide-bore GC column and the five-step program for temperature control up to 350゜C at a linear raising rate of 1 to 20゜C/min. It was suitable to combine to a small MS. The separation patterns of standard mixtures of alkane, alkene, and other polar compounds by this GC were the same as those by an ordinary GC. Next, a small ion-trap MS was evaluated. It was found that a)trace amount of water in buffer gas (herium) reduced the sensitivity and resolution, b) the sensitivity of selected ion monitoring (SIM) was insufficient, c) the self-CI reaction occured in ng-level sample injection and dynamic range was narrow, and d) no CI mode could be applied. These problems were solved by preventing the ions less than m/z19 from formation and scanning by the use of the new sequence program which can automatically change the ionization time according to the ion abundance in pre-scanning from m/z20 to 45. And setting of the reaction periods of 1 to 250ms after electron beam irradiation permitted application of CI. By this GC/MS system the EI and CI spectra could be measured even at amount as low as pg-level sample.
