Research Abstract |
One of the major roles of the National Center for Science Information System (NACSIS) is to compile the union catalog database of books and serials held by university libraries. Nationwide network based on X.25 is now provided for the connection of libraries and NACSIS. Through this network, catalogers access NACSIS database and put data into the database interactively. Therefore it is necessary to provide the facilities for screen data transmission and down-loading of data as well as screen-oriented user-friendly interface. The software for library network was originally implemented on mainframe computers. However, the rapid expansion of library network could not be expected, since it was difficult for small libraries to introduce mainframes. moreover user-friendly interface was not available on mainframes. ork oriented workstation applicable to catalogin tasks. First, we have designed network protocol specification as a basis of the whole system. The screen transfer protocol is the spplication level protocol for the transmission of complicated database record between host computer and terminals. Down-loading function of database record is also included in this protocol. We tried to reduce the workload of network software, as well as the implementation of user- friendly interface. The designed 'VTSS protocol' is based on CCITT X.28 for simplified connection to X.25 network through PAD. The first prototype software of the above mentioned protocol was implemented on UNIX operating system. The protocol specification was disclosed for the computer manufacturers to promote the implementation on various computer system. At present, five manufacturers provide VTSS protocol software for library application. The performance-evaluation was also done for these systems and the software was revised to improve response time. the fruits of this project is the basis of the expansion and service improvement of the library network in Japan.
