THE SILICON ANALOGUES OF STRAINED CYCLOALKANES, HEXANEOPENCYCLOTRISILANE, HEXAKIS(TRIETHYLSILYL)CYCLOTRISILANE, OCTAKIS(ETHYLDIMETHYLSILYL)CYCLOTETRASILANE, AND OCTAISOPROPYLCYCLOTETRASILANE WERE PREPARED BY REDUCTIVE COUPLING OF THE CORRESPONDING DIHALOSILANES WITH LITHIUM OR SODIUM. THE STRUCTURES OF THESE SMALL RINGS WERE DETERMINED BY X-RAY CRYSTLLOGRAPHY. THE PHOTOELECTRON SPECTROSCOPY DISCLOSED THAT THE HOMO OF EACH COMPOUND LIES AT HIGH ENERGY LEVEL. THE POLYCYCLOPOLYSILANES, PERISOPROPYLBICYCLO[2.2.0]HEXASILANE, PERISOPROPYLTRICYCLO[4.2.0.0^<2,5>]OCTASILANE, PERISOPROPYLTETRACYCLO[4.4.0.0^<2,5>.0^<7,10>]DECASILANE WERE SYNTHESIZED BY COCONDENSATION OF 1,1,2,2-TETRAISOPROPYDIISOPROPYLDISILANE AND 1,2-DICHHLOROTETRAISOPROPYLDISILANE WITH LITHIUM. IT WAS SUGGESTED BY U.V. SPECTROSCOPY AND CYCLICVOLTAMMETRY THAT IN THESE LADDER POLYSILANES THE LUMO LEVELS BECOME LOWERWITH INCREASING THE NUMBER OF THE FUSED CYCLOTETRASILANE RINGS. THE AIR-STABLE DISILENE, TETRAKIS(2,4,6-TRIISOPROPYLPHENYL)DISILENE WAS PREPARED AND ITS MOLECULAR STRUCTURE WAS DETERMINED BY X-RAY CRYSTALLOGRAPHY.
