Research Abstract |
1/f fluctuations which are observed as fluctuations in electrical resistance in thermal equilibrium are attributed to fluctuations in local mobility of the specimen. Furthermore, the mobility due to electron phonon scattering causes 1/f fluctuations, From these observations it is quite probable that linear response coefficient in general fluctuates as 1/f in thermal equilibrium. Based on this idea we have performed experiments on obsevation of dielectric constant and permeablity. Ferroelectric materials, triglycine sulfate and Rochelle salt, and a ferromagnetic material, Gd, wew used as specimens. It is found that fluctuations of only the imaginary parts of the dielectric constant and the permeability of these materials show a 1/f spectrum. We have concluded that relaxation processes are fluctuating or relaxation amond thermal phonons have a 1/f spectrum. For a direct observation of phonon fluctuations in thermal equilibrium, intensity fluctuations of Brillouin scattering light intensity by these materials were observed. However, we have not obtained reliable result as yet.
