Research Abstract |
To meet the requirement for teaching Japanese effectively and efficiently to the increasing number of foreign students, new audio-visual learning materials and its presentation system have been developed. The optical video-disc having features of feasibility of easy-video-recording in real time and quick random access in playback, has been used as the medium of learning system. With this newly developed learning system, teachers can easily produce, edit, and modify their instructional materials as they intend and students can teach themselves Japanese effectively by selecting materials that match their level and progress in the study. The composite syllabuses such as skill and functional ones have been used for the first time to the Japanese instructional materials for increasing the variety of the materials and for improving the method for students to study Japanese by themselves. A pseudo-language for writing the teaching program and the functions of the execuing program have been spec

ified uniquely for the system. Another unique feature in the development is that the first trial of recording digitalized audio signals and data on an optical vodeo disc, which is ordinally used for recording analogue signals, has been successfully made. From this result, it can be said that a floppy disc will be replaced with an optical video disc for storing data and computer program as well as the audio/video signals and thereby making the use of learning system more useful and the size of the system compact. So far two learning materials have been developed; one is a video movie to present conversations necessary to buy a book at a bookstore, and another is a still-picture presentation with sound to teach the tellephone conversation. The significant outcomes of the research are summarized as follws; (1) composite syllabuses have been used for the learning materials, (2) an optical video disc has been utilized to produce novel still/motion picture learning materials, (3) a possibility of recording digital data as well as analogue signals on an optical video disc has been found, and (4) the learning and presentation systems developed by introducing the hypermedia concept are promising toward the further development.
