Research Abstract |
The project concentrated on the processes of land degradation and the possibility of "desertification"caused by environmental stress as particularly affected by human impact in the semi-arid interior of Northeast Brazil. Climatic region and vegetation types were corelated to depict changes in the ecosystem as affected by human impact such as agriculture, grazing, and forest activities. Land use studies showed ecosystem degradation as traditional farming systems are modified and economic pressures.Specific individual studies examined changes in crop and grazing landuse, the inventory to analysis of vegetation types, the use of firewood and charcoal as factor of deforestation, seed germination and plant growth as related to soil conditions, and micro-climatic data from field stations. The research projects concentrated on the two regions of Patos and Campina Grande with different ecosystems.Other areas of Northeast Brazil were also studied for purposes of comparison.
