Research Abstract |
The purpose of this project was to organize data acquired from field work conducted during the 1986 fiscal year, and to determine the course for such surveys and research in the future. We studied the preservation, revival, and use of traditional buildings in the United States as follows: (a) observing facilities where traditional houses have been relocated for preservation and public display (outdoor museums);observing historical areas, centering on traditional houses, that have been converted into parks (historical parks);and observing areas that have taken steps to restore and use areas of towns with many traditional houses; (b) collecting specific examples in Japan,Europe, and the U.S.; (c) comparative research of these examples; (d) advocacy of the theory of preservation, restoration, and use of such traditional buildings. We then organized the data collected during our field surveys. These maps, guidebooks, pamphlets, research journals and photographs, defficult to obtain in Japan, provide valuable documentation for our research, together with the results of our observation tours and hearings. We then proceeded to analyze the organized kata;we have published the results in the form of a suvey report. This report includes principles of observation for each area of research, descriptions of each facility, and reference maps.
