Research Abstract

Many Japanese feel close to the Chinese or their culture and do not find them "alien", yet we encounter many differences when we observe their customs and communicatory behavior. This study aims to do fieldwork in China to find out where these differnces exist and to apply what we have gained to the instruction of the Chinese language in Japan.
The research team visited various families in Shanghai and Beijing who offered us invaluable occasions to observe and record aspects of their habitation, garment, and diet in everyday life. We also looked at market squares and stores where they usuaily do their shopping. The rapid social change, notably changes in social systems foiiowing the Cultural Revolution, diversified what the people wear;the army restored the class system and uniforms;some other offices adopted uniforms.
We looked into the ceremonies and rituals:we attended a wedding ceremony and were able to record what went on there.
We investigated such non-verbal expressions as gesticulations and facial expressions to procure systematic and varied data on the communicatory behavior of the Chinese. We did not find any noticeable differences in gestures among individual Chinese but we learned that they have some peculiar gesticulations and expressions which markedly differ from those of the Japanese and other nations.
