Research Abstract

This research group was composed of 7 professors in Nihon University and 1 professor in University of Hawaii. Their activities as shown in the following were continued from 1987 to 1990.
1. The state-of-the-art of several subject areas related to aseismic research performed at universities and research organizations in Japan and United States was inspected. This includes a comparison between seismic design codes of both countries, overviews of laboratry testing methods simulating the structural response to earthquake inputs and of the numerical modelling concerning the hysteretic behavior of RC structures, and a survey of the seismic isolation device and practice in US.
2. The static and pseudo-dynamic tests for two kinds of scale models of an existing tall pier on a highway in Japan were conducted with the aim of comparison between the ductilities of brigde piers on the basis of design codes for concrete bridge in the two countries.
3. The earthquake response spectra obtained from the typical earthquake motions in the both countries were compared to investgate the characteristics of the ground motions. The spectra were calculated for the single-degree-of-freedom system with the bilinear hysteresis considering responses of RC structures with passively controled devices.
4. The nonlinear behavior of RC member under random cyclic loading were analytically and experimentally investigated. In the analytical study an effective numerical method was presented using the endochronic theory for the material constitutive law, and methodologically the lamination of one dimensional finite element model. In the experimental study it was verified that the similitude law is valid even in the plastic range of material under a certain circumstances. Additionally the effect of loading rate in the dynamic model tests was discussed and considered with the comparison of the dynamic test result to the static one.
