Research Abstract |
(1) Angularly Uniform Single-Mode Optical Fibers. (1-1) Single mode fibers with alpha-power index core and triple-clad (relative index difference of the first and the second clads from the third are dentoed by _2 and _3) were desingned under the conditions of zero total dispersion at wavelengths of 1.30mum and 1.55umu and second mode cutoff wavelength less than 1.15mum. When _2<0 and _3>0, it was found that the sensitivity of dispersion to radius and wavelength, the bending radius and the offset loss are smaller for the core with step index (alpha= ) than for the core with alpha=1,2, and 6. (1-2) The design method to realize the total dispersion which is reduced to within 2ps/km/nm over an extended spectral range including wavelength 1.55umm was investigated for the fibers with double-clad, triple-clad and quadruple-clad. The widest spectral range was atined 1.39 umm-2.02umm for the optical fiber with the step-index core and the triple-clad. (2) Polarization-Maintaining Optical Fibers

with Two Hollow Circular Pits. (2-1) We gave the design method of the polarization-maintaining optical fibers with two hollow circular pits which realize the zero total dispersion for HE mode and the largest modal birefringence at two wavelengths of 1.30mum and 1.55mum. The maximum modal birefringences were attained 3.80x10^<-4> at lambda = 1.55mum and 2.34x10^<-4> at lambda = 1.30mum when (refractive-index difference at lambda = 1.55umu)=1.6% and d ( - )/a =1.2n :distance between the center of a core and that of a pit,a,:radius of a core, :radius of pit). (2-2) the design method to realize the total dispersion within 2km/nm including wavelengths 1.30 mum and 1.55mum and the largest modal birefringence was investigated for the fibers with two hollow circular pits. The widest spectral range was attained 1.293mum-1.550mum for D=0.98 when =0.5%. The maximum modal birefringence was attained 0.844x10^<-4> at lambda=1.55mum and the minimum modal birefringence 0.670x10^<-4> at lambda=1.293mum. Less
