Research Abstract |
Alkylation of naphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene was performed, and their reaction products were analyzed in detail. The relation between reaction conditions and yield of products was investigated. Isomerization of dialkylnaphthalenes was also studied. Thiourea adductions of 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene and of 2-methyl-6-t-butyl-naphthalene were examined in order to isolate 2,6-isomers from mixtures of dialkylnaphthalenes. Dialkylnaphthalenes were produced in alkylation of monoalkyl-naphthalenes, which were also obtained in the consecutive reactions of naphthalene with alkylating reagents. Preferable reaction conditions of alkylation, including the kind of alkylating reagents, reaction temperature, and reaction time, were suggested to produce 2,6- and 2,7-dialkylnaphthalenes in cooperation with the suitable reaction condition of isomerization. Thiourea adduction was well performed to isolate 2,6-dialkyl-naphthalene from the mixtures of dialkylnaphthalene isomers. Dialkylnaphthalenes of 2,6-isomers, more than 99 % of purity, were separated from corresponding mixtures by repeating 2 - 7 times of thiourea adduction.
