Research Abstract

The cubic volume of human body was measured on 175 male subjects. consisting mainly of students of our university. by means of a high-precision volumenometer for human body manufactured with the science research subsidy for 1984 through 1986. With the increased precision of body weight measurement, a more accurate specific gravity for human body is required. Though oru data are based mainly on young males at present, measurements are continued on a wider range of subjects.
Since some metrical probllems have been identified in the course of the research, various improvements have been introduced to increase the accuracy of measurements and minimize the invasive effects on subjicts. 1. Improvement of accuracy in body weight measurement In order to assure accurate body weight measurement corresponding to the values provided by the high precision volumometer for human body (range of reliable measurement: 50ml at minimum). we purchased a high-precision electoronic weighing machine (Sartorius … More F 150S. minimum rading: Ig). 2. Improvement of humidity control in the measuring capsule In the air-tight capsule, the body temperature and respiration of the subject cause substantial changes in the intracapsular temperature. which will lead to measurement errors. By approximating the temperature of the pressurized water to body temperature. the temperature changes at the time of measurement were reduced. The procedure. howeber, brought about changes in the pressure of aqueous vapor and thus necessitated the measurement of absolute temperature and the related corrections. 3. Relationship between the constitutional ratio among body constituents and the specific gravity of human body.
The cubic volume and specific gravity of human body were measured on the subjects grouped according to their characteristics including age, sex, height, and body weight. Furthermore, a single subject was measured for various corporal features. The data were accumulated and standardized so that an index for body build would be obtained.
The results so far obtained do not represent the general population due to the precominance of students of our university among the 20 subjects. Our attempts are still being continued to obtain a good representation of the population. Less
