| Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to discover how parents' responses to their child change through pregnancy and child-rearing stages.
I have conducted a 3-year continuous study of 13 couples and their first-born children. The data was collected by visiting their homes at the following 6 times: a)the early, middle and last stage of pregnancy, b)when their first-born child was 3/4, 7/8 and 12/13 months old. To collect data from them during the wives pregnancies, I interviewed them while they were wearing a heart beat counter, after they watched a video concerning the development of unborn and newborn babies. After they had the baby, data was grouped in the following 6 sorts: a)evaluation of the parents' responses, the infant's actions towards the parents and a stranger, the parents' actions towards their infant, and the infant's trait by their parents, b)examination into the parents' child-rearing activities.
The result is as follows: 1)The parents' pulse rate corresponded to their interest when viewing the videos of unborn babies; however, it didn't correspond when viewing the videos of newborn babies. 2)The father's responses to the 3/4 month old infant showed a significant correlation with the response during subsequent visits. But there was no significant correlation as to the mother's. 3)The father who showed a high degree of response also showed an affirmative feeling towards the infant and positive relationship with him. 4)The mother who showed a high degree of response didn't show that kind of consistency. 5)The father who participated in infant rearing showed a high degree of response to the infant. 6)There is no significant difference between the infant's actions towards the father and mother, however the infant's heart beat increased meaningfully with the mother.
