Research Abstract |
The following points will be covered in a report to be published soon.Yamada divides Latin America into two areas: 1)the old High Civilization Area, represented by Central Mexico and 2)the Unurbanized Area in Pre-Columbian Period, represented by Littoral Brazil.Garza observes observes two stages in the Mexican urbanization, 1)slow urbanization before 1940, and 2)rapid "metropolitan type of urbanization," or a "megalopolitan type of concentration." Hosono points out such socio-economic factors as 1)a compression process of modern economic growth, 2)economic policy related to import substitution industrialization, and 3)a rapid demographic growth rate. Consequently, the process is characterized with 1)a highly accelerated nature of urbanization, 2)demographic as well as economic concentration, and 3)a conspicuous intra-urban structural diversification. Ham-Chande analyzed the demographic and urban trends in the North Mexican Border area with the United States. Santos sees ths essence of the contemporary urbanization in Brazil in the "meio tecnico-cientifico." Despite a dispersion trend in industrial production, informational influence of Sao Paulo is felt all over the country. Nakagawa seeks a new definition of Sao Paulo Metropolitan Area (SPMA). Hardoy analyzes the historical trend in the urbanization process of Argentina. Urban problems have not been the objects of serious concerns and long-term planning interests. Takahashi presents a concrete analysis on the urban system in Argentina, taking in account population, financial activies and transportation.
