| Research Abstract |
The expedition of the "Zoogeographical studies on the medically important Diptera in the Southwest Asia" was carried out in 1978, 1988 and 1989. The field surveys provided an excellent collection of dipteran insects to help understand the fauna of Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. The Diptera fauna is mainly Oriental in chalacter, but there is a mixture of Palaearctic in the northern highlands and Ethiopian in the western desert, and this change is clearly correlated with the rainfall.
The results of the present report are summarized as follows: Aedes cataphylla is newly recorded from Khunjerab Pass (4,700m), and colonization of Toxorhynchites minimus has been successful in the laboratory. The twenty-one species of the Culicoides and the thirty species of the black flies recorded from the northern part of Pakistan. Three new species of Tabanidae are described in Nepal. Twenty-five species of Sepsid flies and five species of Fannia are recordes from Pakistan. Twenty-one species of Calliphorid flies are recorded from Bangladesh. Thirty-two species of Sarcophagine flies from Pakistan. Three species of the genus Opalimosina are recorded from Pakistan. Three new species of the genus Siphunculina are described in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal.
