| Research Abstract |
1. Epidemiological surveys for paragonimiasis in Venezuela, 13 (4.5%) out of 292 inhabitants showed positive in intradermal test, and 7 were positive by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, 4 were positive for latex agglutination test, however no Paragonimus eggs were found from both of stools and sputum.
2. Three (0.2%) out of 1,500 snails, Aroapyrgus were detected Paragonimus cercariae, 2 (2.7%) out of 74 crabs, Eudaniela were infected with Paragonimus metacercariae, and 62 adult worms of Paragonimus were found in the lung of 2 out of 8 oppossums, Philander.
3. Morphological examinations of adult worms, metacercariae, cercariae and eggs of Paragonimus in Venezuela have been doned with a light and an electron microscope. From the results in this study, the Paragonimus in Venezuela were different from Paragonimus mexicanus. To define the species of venezuelan Paragonimiasis, it is necessary to more examine the cercariae of the various species reported from Central and South America previously.
