Research Abstract

Fundamental study on ecological control of salt affected soil in Thailand
On the salt affected soil around Khon Kaen in Northeast Thailand. develops some halophytes plant communities, thorny bushes Azima sarmentosa. Maytenus mekongensis community and fleshy leaves herb Pluchea indica-, Synostemon bacciformis-, Gisekia pharnacioides-. Massia triseta- community, which indicates especially the salinity of the soil. In where develops originally Dry Dipterocarpa Decidious Forest, dominant Dipterocarpus tuberculatus. D. obtusifolius and Shorea obtusa, in some area D. alatus evergreen forest. The total annual rain-fall ranges 858.5mm (1989) in this area. But being recorded May to October and November to February recorded almost nothing. The PH values did not change much between the dry and rainy season, that ranges of values were 4 to 5 at bare land, 5.5 to 6 at grassland. The EC value at grassland was 0.02 to 0.1 mS/cm, and was rised to 0.3 - 0.4 mS/cm in dry season, especially the soil surface.
In those salt affected soil, the number of microorganisms, bacteria and actinomycetes were less. The number of the NO2 - oxidizer was so much, but NH4 - oxidizer was especially few. Therefore, it can not expect the effect of soil inoculation on nitrifying activity and soil amelioration on nitrification.
Planting and growing tests for mangrove plants are being performed, growing conditions reviewed by rice husk, gravel and species selected. According to the result of the growing tests, strict mangrove species, Rhizophoraceae grew bad, and sub-, minor mangrove species, Xylocarpus granatum, excoecaria agllocha. Melaleuca leucadrendron and Eucalyptus sp. grewed well, to 2-2.5m heigh per year. At the same time, EC value of the soil was rised back.
Therefore, by the plating on those tree species, it helps the succession advance of vegetation, make up the harmonny balance of the fields and agri-forest, which protect salt crystallization.
