Research Abstract

Increasing mortality rates in female lung cancer has been reported in Japan, U.S.A. and China (Hong Kong and Xuanwei in Yunnan) and environmental factors(E.F.) (other than smoking) seem to be present, and we have tried to find E.F. in Japan, U.S.A. and China collaborative studies.
1) Epidemiologically, we have analyzed the geographic distribution of lung cancer mortality in U.S.A.and Japan using linear regression methods. Possible explanatory variables were considered including occupational exposures and measures of urbanity. Differences between the results in the two countries could be due to the availability of different explanatory variables. For example, in U.S.A. dietary factors were not studied, and in Japan tabacco consumption has yet to be manifest because of shorter average duration of smoking. Further research will focus on identifying those areas in which mortality is poorly explained. In China, there are some areas above-mentioned. We found female mortality in 34.7/10 thousand and 1.5 in neibouring area.
2) Subtypes of adenocarcinomas in Kyushu Univ.(K.U.) were bronchioloalveolar (alone or markedly) in 67% and those in NCI(U.S.A.) in 43%, and large cell carcinoma in K.U. was in 6% and that in NCI in 14%. Adeno-carcinomas in Yunnan was mainly large cell or solid, and carbon particle deposits were so marked.
