| Research Abstract |
The most frequent incidences of skin cancer have been found in the Mueng and Sankampang districts in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Sankampang is a unique district in Chiang Mai Province. There are several home industries for making handicrafts umbrellas. We studied whether the incidence of skin cancer and other skin diseases among umbrella workers in the umbrella village is associated with daily exposure to the tung oil, which contains a tumor promoter, 12-O-hexadecanoyl-16-hydroxyphorbol-13-acetate (HHPA). Skin cancer and skin diseases were surveyed among 309 current umbrella workers, 8 skin-cancer ex-patients and 16 ex-umbrella makers who may have been exposed to tung oil. The ex-umbrella makers (N=16), aged over 50 years, who suffered from chronic skin diseases were also physically examined and no malignancies were found. Whether tung oil is an etiological factor of skin cancer in the umbrella village, therefore, is still unclear.
