Research Abstract |
Plasma confinement characteristics in the ultra low q (ULQ) rigime have been studied using the HBTX-1C device, and the results have been compared with those from REPUTE-1. Scaling laws have been extended to make a progress in basic understandings of the ULQ plasma behavior. High temperatutes of electrons and ions are obtained in relatively low density ULQ discharges. The electron temperature is typically 800 eV, while the ion temperature is even higher than 1 keV. Direct ion heating is confirmed. The energy confinement time is aroud 0.13 ms, which is comparable with that in an RFP plasma. Although, in ULQ, the electron temperature is higher than that in RFP, the impurity radiation is much smaller. The impurity-particle confinement time is thus considered to be small in ULQ. This aspect might be considered as a possible advantage to confine high purity plasma.
