Research Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop a technology for high-stability and high-current density superconducting magnets with Japan-US cooperative research activities.
Actual themes are to study ;
(1) on sources and mechanism of disturbances causing quench of a superconducting magnet,
(2) on disturbance characteristics and quantification of disturbance energy,
(3) on response of superconductors and magnets to disturbances,
(4) on techniques for reducing disturbance energy,
(5) on quench detection and protection methods.
The study has been performed as follows. 8 total number of Japan side investigators stayed in the US side institute (MIT Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory) to do experiments using the its facilities with cooperation of US side investigators, 5 total number of US-side investigators were invited to institutes of Japan side investigators to discuss about related subjects. During the term of this study, we organized the International Symposium on Superconductor Stability ( … More SSS '90) and about 130 attendants from 11 countries discussed and exchanged information on the stability.
The outcomes of the study are summarized as follows ;
(a) Mechanical disturbances such as conductor motions and cracks in structual material are dominant causes for magnet quench.
(b) Formulas to estimate disturbance energy due to conductor motion have been derived and the estimated results well explain experimental data.
(c) Conductor stability has been analyzed by taking account of the characteristics of the disturbance which have we obtained. The analyzed results well explained the experimental data.
(d) Copper plated spacer, spacer made of GFRP with three dimensional fiber structure and accurate dimensions of the conductors and spacers greatly improve the stability of the magnets.
(e) Quench propagation characteristics have been analyzed taking account of anisotropic properties of the winding and the analyzed result well agreed with experimental results.
Those results of the study, we believe, have contributed to the technology for high current density and high stability superconducting magnets. Less
