Research Abstract |
Botanical significance of plants of Yunnan, China has been pointed out in view of bioloigical relationship between Himalayan and Japanese plants. In this research projcet, chemotaxonomical and species-biological comparison of plants of Yunnan with those of Japan and the related area has been conducted under the close co-operation with Kunming Institute of Botany, Academia Sinica. The following results were obtained; 1. Panax species, Araliaceae: The similarity of the saponin-compostion of Panax species in Yunnan to those of Eastern Himalaya and South-Kyushu was disclosed. The anomalous saponin-compostions were observed for the plants growing in the western and southern limits of the distributuion. 2. Bupleurum species, Umbelliferae: Comparison of the physiologically active saponins of the species of Yunnan with those of northern China, Korea and Japan was conducted, showing the good quality of plants grwoing in Yunnan as the medicinal resources. 3. Cucurbitaceous plants: Isolation and structural determination of sweet cucurbitane-glycosides from plants of Yunnan were achieved. It was also revealed that glycoside-composition of Hemsleya spesies has the significant relationship with the taxonomy. 4. Camellia species, Camelliaceae: Chromosome number of a number of this species was investigated. The morphogical comparison of chromosomes of this species was also estalbished. 5. Asarum species, Aristolochiaceae: Chemical constituents of essential oils of this species growing in Yunnan and other districts of China were compared with those of Japan by GC-MS, affording the important evidence for the origin of Japanese species.
