Research Abstract |
This research project was carried out as a continuation of the International Research Project "Theoretical Studies of Atomic Collisions" supported by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in 1986-1987. We collaborated the theoretical atomic collision research group of UK represented by Professor B. Bransden (University of Durham). Later the representative was shifted to Professor D. Crothers (Queen's Univ. of Belfast). Corresponding to the issue of budget from Japan side, SERC (Science and Engineering Research Council) of UK and British-Sasakawa Foundation provides the budget of 11,000 pounds and British Council supported 5,000 pounds for the period of fiscal year of this project. We had held a joint symposium on "Theory of Atomic Collisions" on 5-8 September, 1990 at Univ. of Tsukuba, Japan as a summary talk and discussion of the project. 12 people from UK are attending this symposium. This symposium was supported 1,200,000 yen by Nishina Memorial Foundation and 500,000 yen by Br

itish Council. Also travel expense of I, Shimamura in 1988 was supported by Yoshida Foundation and British Council. In 1988 fiscal year, Y. Itikawa, S. Hara, K. Sakimoto and I. Shimamura went to UK for the collaboration and B. H. Bransden (Univ. of Durham), C. Noble (Daresbury Inst.) and T. Monteiro (Royal Holloway & Bedford New College) stayed Japan. In 1989 fiscal year, from Japan, S. Hara, S. Nakazaki, and I. Shimamura went to UK and from UK, A. Slim (Univ. of Durham), and C. J. Gillan (Queens U. of Belfast) collaborated with Japanese scientists in Japan. In 1990 fiscal year Y. Itikawa, T. Watanabe and S. Hara went to UK and E. A. Armour (Univ. of Nottingham) and A. E. Ermolaev (Univ. of Durham) stayed in Japan. 10 scientists from UK besides above 2 attended the UK-Japan symposium and discussed the problems of mutual research. In this project, we had chosen research subjects which can be collaborated in complemental way. Inelastic scattering of electrons from ions, R-matrix theory for dynamic processes of molecules, External field effect on atomic dynamic processes, photo-ionization of molecules, and ion-atom collisiontheory are the titles of collaboration. Some of these have already published as collaborated papers in Phys. Rev., J. Phys. B and so on. Some others are new in press, submitted and are in preparation. Less
