| Research Abstract |
During the last three consecutive years, researchers from Chiba University and the University of Alabama convened annually to address and analyze the conflicts and coordination of U. S. -Japan Trades. In October 1988, our first conference was held at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, followed by the second Izu conference in October/November 1989, and the concluding sessions at the East-West Center in Hawaii in July/August 1990.
Research partners, consisting of at least one from Chiba University and another from the University of Alabama, focused one aspect of the U. S. -Japan trade issues, and conducted a comparative study. Specific issues investigated by these research partnerships include :
(1) Effects of International Trade and Foreign Direct Investments on the Domestic Economy in Relation to the "Deindustrialization" ;
(2) Consumptionoriented vs. Productionoriented Economic Structure, and the Prediction of Future Consumption ;
(3) Determinant Factors of Different Saving Propensities ;
(4) Effects of Deregulation of Airline and Telecommunication Industries ;
(5) Coordination of Monetary Policies, by Use of Either a Single Index or Multiple Indices ;
(6) Protection of Intellectual Property Rights ;
(7) Agricultural Trade with a Special Emphasis on Beef ;
(8) Industrial Restructuring with Emphases on Steel and Automobile Industries ; and
(9) Corporate Management and Corporate Identity Strategies.
Interim reports of the above investigations have been circulated in the form of proceedings -- 1988 proceedings prepared by the participants from the University of Alabama, and 1989 and 1990 (in Japanese, submitted to Monbusho) proceedings by Chiba University. Final version will be forthcoming from the Macmillan Press in 1991.
