Research Abstract |
This Research Project intended to develope "Studies on Blending Process, Blend Morphology and Mechanical Properties of Polymer Blends" in cooperation with Polymer Engineering Center at the University of Akron (APEC), USA. In the term of this project, we could invite 9 investigators in total from APEC, and 15 Japanese investigators, including members out of this project, visited to APEC for cooperative research. This research was performed by the above investigators in charge of following four subjects separately and/or cooperatively. (1) Study on blending machine and blending process. This subject was researched at APEC as J. L. White et al. Designed and constructed new blending machine already in APEC. Kitao et al. Carried materials which prepared in Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT), and blended them by the machine (Twin Screw Extruder) and carried back to KIT and the morphology and mechanical properties of the blends were observes at KIT. (2) Measurement and analysis of morphology of b

lends. This subject was also researched at APEC as T. Kyu have good instruments to observe the blends morphology. Our graduate student H. Takahashi visited to study under direction of T. Kyu. He carried materials to APEC and investigated their phase separation kinetics. (3) Measurement and analysis of mechanical properties of blends. Our graduate studeny I. Nishimura visited to APEC and made rubber blends and carried back to KIT, and measured and analized their mechanical properties at KIT using a specially designed instrument under the direction of T. Soen et al. (4) Developement of computer programs to make the data-base relating blending compounds, blends morphology and practical properties of blends. This subject was researched at KIT under the direction of T. Soen et al. That is, using the results obtaited on subject (3) and their practical properties like as strength at breakage, elongation at breakage, hardness, reboundness, wet skid index etc. were stored onto the data-base and analyzed by the factor analysis method.
