Research Abstract |
This study is a three year program, the object of which is to collect as many as possible Tibetan documents which have recently been reproduced in India, Nepal, and Bhutan, and to collate these documents into a format that can be easily used by scholars. This is the final year of the study and we have sorted out the newly obtained documents and the documents which were already owned by the Toyo Bunko (excluding wooden copies). In this process we have fully utilized out personal computer and have not only used existing software, but have also created a new program especially for this work. We have made a general catalogue of the Tibetan documents existing in the Toyo Bunko based on this information. The following tow points were the basis for our making this catalogue, while we were at all times conscious of the purpose of this study : to seek ways in which to utilize Tibetan documents as effectively as possible. 1. Each item in the catalogue contains a lot of information ; name of the a

uthor, year of birth and death of the author, title in Tibetan, title in English, name of the editor, year and place of publication, size of the document, total number of pages. This information was recorded with no omission. 2. Considering the convenience to users, the catalogue is divided into chapters according to sects or category (for example ; history, literature, grammar, medical, etc.). In each chapter, documents are listed alphabetically by the name of the author, or if the author's name is not known, by the name of the document. The layout of the catalogue has also been designed for ease of use. This facility allows a users to easily search for the document he/she wants by only looking through the relevant sect of category of the catalogue. In addition, we have obtained micro fiche records of Tibetan documents fORm the Unites States, to make up for what we could not actually collect. As a result, we now have copies of most of the Tibetan documents issued to date. These documents will be made available for use by all scholars. Less
