Research Abstract |
1. In the 63rd year of Showa (1988), the 1st year of the 3 year plan project, we got the authoring system for CAI programing together with the necessary equipments. Using the system and the equipments, we started making CAI programs, first for Korean, Thai and Cambodian, then those for Bengali and kantonese, through next 2 years, the 1st and the 2nd years of Heisei (1989-1990). In the course of making CAI programs, we made some character fonts of native scripts, for Korean, for Thai, for Cambodian, and for Bengali. We had the Intensive Course of Korean, and discussed on the use and role of CAI programs in such an intensive course of languages. 2. Viewed as a 3 year plan project, we would say that the study had been well developed as a whole. But there remain some problems to be solved. Making use of the authoring system, it is not able for us to indicate errors to be corrected of incorrect answers on the screen. Moreover, the capacity and facility of the processing machines is not likely

to have sufficient power for analyzing and representing language data. a) In most cases we cannot find any Front-End processors for native scripts of languages in Asia and Africa. Even in the rare case where we find such an FEP, we are made to realize that it does not work within the framework of the authoring system. We could not help making character-fonts and controling programs for those native scripts. b) It is true that the machine is equipped with devices for recording sounds and for playing them back, but the duration valid for recording is not long enough for practicing sentence exercises. c) For teaching such languages that are spoken in quite a different specific cultural background, it is necessary to develop an integrated program which controls and harmonizes learning courses on the screen with language sounds recorded and with picture-images reproduced through video-recorder. 3. In order to solve these problems mentioned above, it is necessary for us to use the highly efficient machines to come in a few years. We would be able to find a clue for making highly integrated CAI programs by repeating experiments using those highly efficient equipments. Less
