Research Abstract |
This study was aimed to clarify characteristics of learning and memory in aged animals. Aged (14-27months old) rats were compared with youn g(2-3 months old) rats on their learning and memory performances in the following tasks. (1) Position (right vs. lef) discrimination learning in Grice box. (2) Brightness (black vs. white) discrimination learning in Grice box. (3) Place learning in 8-arm radial-arm maze. (4) Delayed matching-to-sample learning and memory test in trough T-maze. (5) Delayed matching-to-sample learning and memory test in trough Y-maze. (6) Delayed matching-to-sample learning and memory test in elevated Y-maze. The results indicated that the aged rats showed deficits in learning and memory Performances, especially on the tasks in which sufficient discrimination cues were not available. It should be noted, however, that individual differences were much greater in aged than in young animals.
